I first saw this in the cinema and thought it was hilarious. 

So could Ahly live up to this ad and be big in Japan? Nope... They finished 6th out of 7 in the World Club Cup in Japan. Better than finishing last I guess, which happened to them 3 years ago in the same tournament.

Though an all round disappointing performance in the interactive category, the few winners still deserve to be mentioned. This is the website from the hugely popular cartoon from the UAE. Has nothing extravagant, or any super cool or innovative ideas, but at least its colourful and looks nice. Navigation is also pretty easy. Brought to you be Breathe Branding, Dubai.

However my personal favourites were the Panadol interactive online banners, check them out for yourself..(link), it was amusing to watch all the people inside the person's head scatter away like little play fugitives. A refreshingly creative concept from Memac Ogilvy & Mather, Dubai.

The last of the Grand Prix winners from this year's Dubai Lynx Awards. In the remaining categories, radio, interactive, direct & sales promotions and integrated, no grand prix was awarded. Goes to show that as much as the region is progressing we're still very much behind in certain areas. Note to self: must work harder.

Clever concept, but all credit I think should be given to Jason (Art Director / Typographer / Illustrator). Mainly due to the fact that the main appeal of this campaign is in its visual execution. I'm sure it made for very eye-catching outdoor advertising and an interesting read in print. Nicely done...

I think this campaign is great. During the Euro cup as well, when the ad came on, wherever I was watching the game, people were laughing and connecting to this. As Egyptians, most of us are football freaks. We sit on ahwas and talk football. Be it right or wrong, everyone has a say. To put it bluntly, this campaign works.

I remember sitting at one of the interactive terminals at the Lynx sifting through the Print Shortlist relatively quickly when this campaign popped up. "Ewww" was my primary reaction.
Then I noticed the Heinz tag in the corner, I read the line and "Woooow" was my next.

Honestly though, this campaign is unmissable. The art direction not only screams at you, it bloody disgusts you. The idea comes straight from Jimmy beta3 el Sogo2 from underneath the bridge in Cairo. And that's what makes it great. Well done leo Burnett Cairo, you've done it again.

Dubai Lynx 2009 Winners

The winners of the 3rd Dubai Lynx Awards, the leading creative advertising competition for the Middle East and North Africa, were revealed last night at the Awards Ceremony which took place to a packed room at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre.

After judging 2079 entries the jury awarded a total of 135 Dubai Lynx trophies.

The Media category was the strongest with a total of 39 winners, followed by Print with 26, there were 21 in Outdoor, 18 trophies were awarded in the Direct & Sales Promotion category, 13 in TV/Cinema, 11 in Interactive, 4 Radio winners and 3 Integrated winners.

The Media Grand Prix went to Starcom MediaVest Group, Dubai for the 'Fallen In love Again' Mars Chocolate campaign.

The Print Grand Prix went to Leo Burnett Cairo for the Heinz Ketchup campaign 'Egyptian Hotdog', 'Egyptian Burger', 'Egyptian Pizza'.

The Outdoor Grand Prix was awarded to FP7 Dubai for the Braindrain Education programme campaign 'Gumi Bears', 'Poodle Balloons', 'Anatomy'.

Fortune Promoseven, Cairo won the TV/Cinema Grand Prix for the Coca-Cola 2008 European Football campaign 'France', 'Italy', 'Germany', 'Spain'.

There were no Grand Prix awarded in the Radio, Interactive, Direct & Sales Promotion and Integrated categories.

FP7 Doha were honoured with the Agency of the Year. Runners up were FP7 Dubai in 2nd place and Y&R Dubai in 3rd.

The inaugural Media Agency of the Year trophy was awarded to Starcom MediaVest Group, Dubai with OMD Dubai taking 2nd place and in 3rd, Leo Burnett Beirut.

The winners of the Young Creatives competitions were also revealed during the Ceremony with the team from TBWA-Raad in Dubai winning the Print competition and the team from Initiative Dubai winning the Media competition.

Also honoured during the ceremony were Melody Entertainment Ltd which was awarded with the prestigious title of Advertiser of the Year and Tanvir Kanji, Head of Inca Tanvir, who was named as Advertising Person of the Year.

I like the art direction though..

The Tribe: Next door to Tonic

A clever one from the tribe.  Here the ad implies that Tonic, who are next door, spy and steal ideas from the tribe. But off course, you wouldn't expect Tonic to just let that fly, so the next day they came up with quite an amusing comeback. See if you can spot the difference between them.

Mr Lemon. Dr Lime

This is part of Sprite's new campaign in Egypt. It features two cool CG-Animated characters: Mr Lemon and Dr Lime talking mostly nonsense, but funny none the less. A definite step-up from Memac Ogilvy's horrendous campaign (Ana Kida, Ana Sprite) that plagued Egypt last summer. The billboards are fresh and colourful as well, although the site (, except for wallpapers and videos, offers nothing to the imagination.

I believe FP7 did this although I could be wrong. If someone knows the details, please...

The maze idea alone has been done to no end, that's pretty well known. The problem here is the maze seems to be the clearest one of the three. The sudoku one is my personal favourite, but the three together left almost no impact on me. Yes the visual kinda sorta works with the copy, but final opinion on it is "meh" accompanied by a shoulder shrug.
